IRCA ANNOUNCES 2021 SCHOLAR ATHLETES
The Intercollegiate Rowing Coaches Association is excited to announce our 2021 IRCA Scholar Athletes. We are proud to offer our congratulations to these rowers and coxswains who have demonstrated what it truly means to be a "student-athlete", particularly during a year that challenged both the “student” part and the “athlete” part unlike any in recent memory.
In order to be named a "scholar athlete", rowers and coxswains must have met the following criteria:
Athletes from all IRCA Member Schools are eligible
Athletes must be in second year or more of eligibility
Athletes must have competed in your program’s top 3 boats during the current season or raced at the 2021 IRA Championship
Athletes must have at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA through fall semester
As we celebrate the end of the IRCA's inaugural year, below are some numbers that further highlight these achievements.
There were 403 rowers and coxswains who met the criteria set by our Awards & Polling Committee (detailed above). They represent 53 teams (48 heavyweight and 5 lightweight) from the 59 member programs.
The average GPA was a 3.74. The highest GPA was a 4.165 from Oliver Diamond ‘23 of Wesleyan University.
The highest number of scholar athletes from a single team came from Williams College with 24, followed by the US Naval Academy lightweights and University of Washington, both with 18. The highest number from one program came from the US Naval Academy with 28 combined scholar-athletes from their heavyweight and lightweight teams, followed by Princeton University with 23 from their combined heavyweight and lightweight teams.
