“Athlete Marketing Essentials: NIL Certification is a free online course where leaders from Facebook and Instagram break down the vast array of tools and services available for athletes to grow their audience, distribute content and generate meaningful revenue.

The six-lesson course will help college athletic departments and athletes capitalize on this new era of collegiate athletics. All course participants earn a digital verified badge they can display on their social channels, and also receive access to the Facebook and Instagram Safety Guide for Athletes as well as the College Athletes on Instagram & Facebook online hub.”

“Several years ago, in a partnership with the Seattle Fire Department, Seattle Police and UW Medicine, UW Rowing helped to create an extensive program for water emergencies. The program is called Water Emergency Training or “W.E.T.”.

The genesis of the program was to figure out and train for how to deal with a health emergency on the water, centered primarily around cardiac emergencies. A rower in a shell, for instance, would need to be removed from his or her boat before aid could be administered.”

Another step, devised by the UW team, was to prepare to get a patient to the closest possible pick-up location, where an ambulance or other first responders can be waiting to treat the victim and/or transport them to a hospital. For that, the team researched local dock locations and devised a map showing the various spots around Lake Washington and Lake Union that are most easily accessible to EMTs.

Now with the pandemic there are new challenges – primarily to do with the fact that rowers and coaches are now more frequently operating by themselves or in greatly smaller numbers. Whereas two or three people used to be on each coaching launch now there is usually only one.

To deal with these changes, UW rowing team doctor Henry Pelto and the rowing program put together a new set of protocols, and a series of new videos explaining them all.”

Interactive Boater Safety Courses

“Boating safety is a concern for everyone on the water. Even if you’re not required to pass a boater safety course in your state or province, boater safety is everyone’s responsibility. Boaters can keep themselves and their passengers safe by learning about responsible boat operation, etiquette, and the rules of the waterways. An educated boater is a safer boater.”

Note that ilearntoboat interactive courses are not available for every state, whereas boaterexam.com has state-approved courses for all 50 states.

“The STEM to Stern program was started in Milwaukee, WI at the Milwaukee Rowing Club as a way to eliminate the barriers of participation and to increase representation on the team.  The main barriers to rowing include transportation, swimming lessons and club fees.  By creating ways to address these barriers, students are able to participate, regardless of where they are from.”
